What is a QbCheck and Why is it an Important Part of ADHD Diagnosis?

If you have ADHD or think you have it, you will probably understand just what a complex and challenging process of diagnosing it can be. It often involves comprehensive ADHD assessment and observations, however, there is one tool that has gained prominence in aiding ADHD diagnosis in recent years and that is the QbCheck.

In this guide, we’ll look at what the QbCheck is, how it works, and what you can expect when taking part, plus why this check brings so much value to an ADHD assessment and diagnosis.

What is the QbCheck?

QbCheck is a computer-based test designed to objectively measure and assess various aspects of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention. Unlike traditional diagnostic methods that heavily rely on subjective observations, QbCheck introduces a more objective and data-driven approach to ADHD assessment. The QbCheck can be carried out from home, is extremely user-friendly, and the convenient, valuable, and accurate results offered, are compared with individuals of the same age and gender (biological sex) who have a clinical diagnosis of ADHD and those who don’t.

When is the QbCheck Used?

The QbCheck is designed as an enhancement to the ADHD assessment, not a standalone tool but part of the patient journey. The QbCheck is taken as part of the pre-assessment and then throughout the treatment journey to measure your treatment effectiveness.

How Does the QbCheck Work and What to Expect?

It works by measuring your activity level, ability to concentrate, and impulse control and then uses this data to obtain a more comprehensive evaluation of ADHD symptoms. To be eligible for the QbCheck you must be between 6 and 60 years of age and have access to a laptop or computer with a webcam and stable internet.

The core of the QbCheck is to evaluate sustained attention and inhibitory control whereby individuals are required to respond to specific stimuli while ignoring distractors. The software records response times, errors, and other relevant metrics to provide a detailed analysis of attentional performance. The check also monitors motor activity and helps to assess hyperactivity levels by analysing movement patterns. Combining attentional and motor activity data allows clinicians to gain a more comprehensive understanding of ADHD-related behaviours.

One of the key advantages of the QbCheck is its ability to generate objective and quantifiable data. Clinicians receive detailed reports that outline specific metrics such as reaction time, variability in response, and movement patterns. This information aids in differentiating between ADHD and other conditions, reducing the risk of misdiagnosis.

Preparing for the QbCheck.

Step 1 – Preparation – follow 12 simple instructions to help you get ready to take the test and ensure you feel comfortable with them.

Step 2 – Ratings – provide ratings based on your behaviour using the prompts given, taking time to reflect on them and give honest input.

Step 3 – Environment Check – take a moment to adjust your seating and lighting to ensure you’re comfortable and check your computer.

Step 4 – Understand Instructions – take time to read and understand the instructions, paying close attention to detail to complete the test.

Step 5 - Ability Test – complete a 1-minute ability test to ensure that you fully understand the instructions and improve your chances of completing the test.

Step 6 – The Full Test – allow yourself 15 to 30 minutes to fully complete the test.

Step 7 – Report – once your test is completed it can be sent to your medical professional ahead of your ADHD assessment.

What Value Does the QbCheck Bring to ADHD Assessment and Diagnosis?

A QbCheck can provide important objective insights into specific ADHD traits dependent on your age and gender (biological sex). It allows clinicians to look at all the core signs of ADHD, taken from motion tracking systems and computerised tasks, and compare them against individuals of the same age and gender, both with and without an ADHD diagnosis. This data also helps clinicians to provide effective treatment, when used as a follow-up test.

The QbCheck is also highly accessible for everyone and can be performed easily, at home, taking around 15 – 30 minutes to complete. It’s also widely used, well documented, CE-marked, and FDA-cleared, making it a globally recognised solution. The QbCheck also shares a strong evidence base with the QbTest, the tool used by the NHS and positively appraised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
